PINK PARTY - JUNE 4TH from 1-7PM

Join us for a party celebrating pink wines and women's reproductive rights!

We'll be pouring four wine flights of our newly released pink wines and will donate 50% of the day's profits to support women's reproductive rights and access.

Plus, if we see you wearing pink, we'll throw in a super secret fancy bonus pour. We hope you join us to enjoy some great wine and support women's rights.

NEW RELEASE:A FRAYED KNOT

Sometimes the best things come as a result of an accident. When your hand is forced in an unfamiliar direction, you can discover paths and solutions you never knew you liked. That is how this wine came to be. I first made it by sort of mistake in 2013 when a vineyard owner gifted us a half ton of Gewurztraminer - we have been refining the accidents that made this wine special ever since. Sometimes a knot that frayed is still the best (and least afraid) answer to a complicated question.

The 2021 "A Frayed Knot" Rosé of Gewürztraminer gets its orangey color, and savory characteristics, from the skins. Unlike our Rosé of Pinot Noir which goes directly from the vineyard into the press, these Alsatian-style grapes spend up to two weeks cold soaking in their own juice, imparting a rosy color and some light texture. Then the whole lot goes into the press and undergoes a gentle fermentation in old barrels. The resulting wine is a dry mouthful of delicious tropical and stone fruits with a bit of spice and a wink of bitters. It's a truly unique bottling and always goes quickly.

Only 75 cases were produced, so if you want more later, well, I'm afraid not.

GARAGELAND ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR 2021

For those of you who have been following along, you know that Garageland is the cousin of our Love & Squalor line of fine wines. It is named in homage to all of the crafters and makers who toil over their passions behind non-descript roll-up doors in warehouse districts around the globe. Just like we do here at Portland Wine Company.

Garageland expanded into the world of rosé with this pale pink wine crafted from two youthful vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. The Pinot noir was direct-pressed – tossed stem-and-all into our grape press – and gently squeezed. It was then fermented in tank to retain purity of fruit flavors and the crispness we all want from our summer quaffer. This year we’ve added a screw cap closure for convenience when you are at the beach or on the mountain.

Like all of our bottlings, this is a limited-production wine. We should have enough to get through the summer, but it will be fleeting. We will be offering it on tap from the cask at the tasting room. If you like pink wines as much as we do, keep your eyes open for forthcoming emails about our next vintage of “A Frayed Knot” Rosé of Gewürztraminer, the pink Rumble Can, and the top-secret grape varietal in the next Pet Matt Rosé.

NEWLY RELEASED RESERVE

bottle of Pinot Noir Reserve 2017

We are excited to release the 2017 Reserve Pinot Noir!

This wine is made out of my favorite barrels from the vintage. I love the blending process and liken it to preparing a perfectly balanced plate for dinner guests. The selection and blending process is quite rigorous because I like it that way.

This is a reserve wine, whatever that means, but the style is not the typical – bold and oaky - we have been trained to expect from the designation. These chosen barrels are the ones that show subtle promise when young, but are like a rider on the horizon and we may have to wait a while before the true shape of the wine comes into focus. I hold the wine back from release until I feel it is starting to open, but I am sure we could all wait longer to drink it.

Only 50 cases were produced and it's already going fast.

Sparkling RosE Pet Matt Release

petmatt_sparkling_rose.jpg

Do you know what pairs well with
Back-to-school
Indian summer
Leaving your bike out in the rain
Fried green tomatoes
The fading of your sandal tan
String lights on the patio?

The answer of course is “bubbles!” No matter what the question.

Last year was the first release of our Pet Matt pétillant naturel. You probably missed it because it was gone in a flash. Same thing is going to happen this time, so you are fairly warned. We made 50 cases of the pink sparkling Pinot. Most of it is marked for the 'Friends With Benefits' wine club, but we have held some for website and walk-up customers. 3-bottle limit.

Outdoor seating is still going strong at the Portland Wine Company tasting room. And we are now welcoming vaccinated drinkers inside. We have family friendly snacks and feature a rotating lager beer on tap - this month it’s the Pilsner from our friends at Heater-Allen Brewing. Our latest Mothershucker white blend is also getting the tap treatment and you can sample the last of the 2013 Antsy Pants on our wine flights. Hope to see you soon. Our hours are still Th/Fri 4-8pm; Sat/Sun 1-7pm

HIGH SCORES FOR SUNNYSIDE

SUNNYSIDE_VINEYARD_HEADER.jpg

At Love & Squalor we have pursued our dream of Dry Riesling since the beginning in 2006, teaming up with the best Riesling growers in the Willamette and constantly refining our techniques in the cellar. In 2014 we released our first Single Vineyard Dry Riesling, with the goal of elevating this grape to the level of other single vineyard varietals in The Valley.

We have worked with Sunnyside Vineyard for many vintages, and their Riesling fruit has proven out year after year to be the best we have ever encountered. And it is this site that makes this bottling so vibrant. But don’t just take our word for it, reviews are in and the critics agree Vinous 91 points, Wine Enthusiast 92 points. (see reviews here)

PERFECTLY AGED ANTSY PINOT

We are down to our last few cases

We held onto our stash of the 2012 and 2013 Antsy Pants Reserve Pinots as long as we could, but we are down to the last few cases of each. It has been a real pleasure to watch tasters’ blissful faces when we pour them one of these fully developed treasures. The 2012 is full and voluptuous with waves of dark fruit and spices. The 2013 is graceful and deceptively light until it hits you with its powerful core of cherry and earth. Get them here while they last. Buy some now because they are going fast buy here -->

SIDE NOTE: From now on this wine will be re-named “Reserve” and will lose the “Antsy Pants” distinction. Those fancy madras slacks, however, will still be hanging on the label. If you know, you know.

SPRING UP MARKET SAT 4/17 12-5pm

We’re having a little market in our parking lot to celebrate Spring. Saturday, APRIL 17th from 12-5pm.

It’s gonna be great weather, ya’ll! We’ve set up some tables and umbrellas for sipping on glasses of wine and invited neighbors and friends to join us. We’ll be selling wines by the glass, as well as bottles to go or to enjoy at the tables. We will also have two new releases (Garageland 2020 Rosé of Pinot Noir and Love & Squalor Gamay Noir 2019) and case discounts!

We’ll have beautifully curated gifts by Heidi West Designs, Sunbreak Handmade Goods and Rooted Remedies just in time for Mother’s Day, plants from Birds & Bees Nursery baked goods to snack on from A.Dood Baked Goods, cider from Alter Ego Cider and of course, no party would be complete without the Jackalope Wine Truck

VIDEO OF JOHN + FRIENDS TALK

Last Saturday, April 25 at 5 PM PST, We joined John Grochau of @grochau_cellars for a new virtual tasting series, John & Friends. John and Matt both found wine by working in the restaurant industry and both got into winemaking thanks to some fine, forward-thinking Oregon winemakers. We tasted a few wines and shared a few stories across the digital divide along with a some friends who joined the live chat on Zoom. Here is what we had to say.

SPRING 2020 WINE NEWS

2019 was one for the books. It sure was fun.

Front of our Building on SE 50th Ave

Front of our Building on SE 50th Ave

It has been our longtime family dream to move our winery to Portland, and 2019 is the year that we made that dream a reality. After years of touring warehouses and vacant lots, we secured our sweet spot on the corner of 50th and Kelly and started putting pen to blueprint. It took some patience, and a few tantrums, but we finally got our remodel approved and then we got to break ground.

Grand Opening party photo by Cheryl Juetten

Grand Opening party photo by Cheryl Juetten

Our building used to be the local neighborhood grocery, built sometime in the ‘20s. We had to take it down to the studs, rebuild the entire storefront, erect seismic sheer walls and pour a new concrete floor. Not to mention installing an entirely new roof.

The back section of our building was erected in the ‘50s, when the street became a bit more light-industrial. It’s the perfect shell for winery production. Lots of roll-up doors and strong floors. All we had to do was put in trench drains, electricity, water, lighting, gas heat, ventilation, a couple of extra doors . . . that’s all.

We finished up construction and got approved for occupancy in the beginning of September (just in the nick of time), moved in our truckloads of equipment and wine in barrels in a big hurry, and then saw our first grapes come through the doors on September 5th. Most of the equipment worked, and the fermentation was smooth (always an unknown in a new space). The drains worked. Phew.

We have never had a tasting room before, but now was the time to open one. Many of you were at our opening party or have been by since to check it out – thanks. We are trying to make it a cool and welcoming place to hang out and enjoy our wines. It’s a pretty room with a full view of the barrel cave. We look forward to putting some tables out on the sidewalk come Springtime so neighbors can bring their dogs. We have started booking some private events – so think of us for your next party or work function. We have also been planning some public events, starting with a special menu we had last Friday for Valentine’s Day.

We got a few mentions you can read more about: EATER PDX and a longer list on our site, here

OREGON WINE PRESS: Chinese and Christmas

Chinese and Christmas
The deliciously popular American holiday pairing
By Mark Stock

Most Americans possess at least one fond memory wherein Chinese food played a starring role. Perhaps not the decidedly authentic food available on the streets of Shanghai, Shenzhen or Beijing, but an Americanized cousin nonetheless. There is something deeply satisfying about even the most-farfetched and unhealthy adaptations of classic Middle Kingdom dishes. Given that there are now nearly 45,000 Chinese-American restaurants in the U.S., that type of satisfaction is rarely far from home.

...Winemaker Matt Berson of Love & Squalor Wine in McMinnville seeks out places like Szechuan Chef and Ocean City in Portland around the holidays. “We often find ourselves converging on a Chinese restaurant over the Christmas holiday,” he said. “They are usually the only places open, and they are convivial with the big family tables and the Lazy Susans for the kids to play with.”

Berson adds how the noodles and fried food, all-too-familiar during Hanukkah, might have something to do with the fixation. Moreover, the typical Chinese restaurant is unlikely to go overboard with the Christmas decorations, a draw for those who prefer a good egg roll to an animatronic reindeer...

What they forgot to mention is what goes best with Chinese food: Love & Squalor RIESLING!
You can buy it
