Our most beloved farm to table wine-dinner-in-a-field is having their last summer and we get to join! We are pairing up with with MAGNA KUSINA (Food & Wine Best new chef 2021 and Oregonian Restaurant of the Year 2021) August 5th.

Plate & Pitchfork dinners reinforces the connection between the farm and the food on your plate. Each adventurous evening begins with a wine tasting and appetizers before guests take a tour of the host farm. Once the tour is complete guests are seated at beautifully dressed tables for a four-course dinner prepared and served in the middle of a field by some of our region's finest chefs, each course is paired with wine from the evening’s featured winemaker.

Throughout the evening diners hear from the farmer, chefs, winemaker and often times other producers who have contributed to the meal. Dinners are served family style creating a boisterous and celebratory energy.

In honor of the 20th Anniversary Plate & Pitchfork is launching a new non-profit organization to extend the support they provide to Oregon’s food system. The Plate & Pitchfork Producer Fund is a 501c3 organization that will provide financial support to family-owned farmers, ranchers and food producers in Oregon.

Over the last 20 years, farm dinners have become abundant, but farms have not.  In fact, we continue to lose farmland at an alarming rate. The average age of farmers in Oregon is just shy of 60 years old - the highest in the country. As these farmers retire, 10 million acres of land - more than 64% of the state’s farmland - may pass to larger corporate entities or cease to be used for farming entirely. Land has become increasingly expensive and out of reach for many of the next generation of farmers and the inputs needed to grow food - from seed to labor to fuel - are also increasingly expensive.

Plate & Pitchfork is committed to not only feeding our guests, we are committed to providing our food system with the support it needs to thrive. The return on our investment is access to healthy, nutritious foods, thriving rural economies, increased employment, valuable wildlife habitat, replenished groundwater and beautiful open spaces.

PINK PARTY FUNDRAISER FOR REPRODUCTION RIGHTS

Stand up for REPRODUCTIVE healthcare rights with us on Saturday, June 3rd, from 1 - 7pm.

We kicked off this event last year in the tasting room after Roe vs. Wade was struck down. While we are grateful Oregon has strong protections, other states do not. Both Angie and Jess have roots in Texas so it's a natural fit to help women who do not have the same protections we do.

This year we will donate 50% of all profits for the day to the Lilith Fund, which offers direct financial assistance for reproductive healthcare, and provides direct financial and emotional support to Texans forced to travel to access abortions, contraceptives, counseling and gender-affirming care.

We'll be pouring our pink wines and the new Skin Contact Pinot Gris paired with food from the amazing team at The Minnow (you really need to check them out). A few of the plates they are planning are a seared PNW wild-caught albacore loin, coriander & nigella spice blend, spring herb potato salad and a Spring vegetable couscous salad with snap peas, asparagus and pickled carrot magyar pepper dressing.

The Minnow delivers meals, prepped and ready to cook, to families in Portland, OR. Our ingredients are primarily sourced from local farms and product makers.

The wine lineup will be:

  • 2022 “A Frayed Knot” Skin Contact Gewurztraminer

  • 2022 Garageland Rose of Pinot Noir

  • 2022 "Walking on Gilded Splinters" Skin Contact Pinot Gris

  • 2021 Pet Matt Pét Nat Sparkling Rosé of Zinfandel

$15/person tasting fee. Food charged separately. 50% of all profits from tastings and bottle sales go to Lilith Fund. Wine Club savings apply!

Want a little skin contact?
You're probably thinking, "How did this email get through my spam filter with such dirty language!"
Well, fear not! We are talking about Gerwürztraminer, the "A Frayed Knot" skin-contact Gewürztraminer to be exact.
You see, it's our featured wine today at the tasting room.

You can swing by, have a sip or a glass, and then take home any three bottles of any of our wines for 10% off. It's the perfect way to have wine on hand for your weekend.

10% OFF THREE OR MORE BOTTLES TODAY ONLY IN THE TASTING ROOM.
OPEN 4-8PM.

Our seasonal packs (six or twelve) are the perfect way to celebrate this gorgeous NW summer we're having.

This pack is not your regular, "hey I have Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, and a so-so Pinot Noir" summer pack...no...this pack is loaded with delicious, unique, and fun wines. These wines are conversation starters and sentence finishers (like, "Wow, that's so...good.").

From the bubbly and vivacious "Pet Matt" to the luscious and jammy "Marty The Behemoth," you will not be disappointed.

Oh, and a little secret. We only have four bottles remaining of the Gamay Noir 2018 that is included in this pack. That means this particular pack will not be around for long!

C'mon indulge a bit and drink the good stuff.

NEW RELEASE:A FRAYED KNOT

Sometimes the best things come as a result of an accident. When your hand is forced in an unfamiliar direction, you can discover paths and solutions you never knew you liked. That is how this wine came to be. I first made it by sort of mistake in 2013 when a vineyard owner gifted us a half ton of Gewurztraminer - we have been refining the accidents that made this wine special ever since. Sometimes a knot that frayed is still the best (and least afraid) answer to a complicated question.

The 2021 "A Frayed Knot" Rosé of Gewürztraminer gets its orangey color, and savory characteristics, from the skins. Unlike our Rosé of Pinot Noir which goes directly from the vineyard into the press, these Alsatian-style grapes spend up to two weeks cold soaking in their own juice, imparting a rosy color and some light texture. Then the whole lot goes into the press and undergoes a gentle fermentation in old barrels. The resulting wine is a dry mouthful of delicious tropical and stone fruits with a bit of spice and a wink of bitters. It's a truly unique bottling and always goes quickly.

Only 75 cases were produced, so if you want more later, well, I'm afraid not.

RIESLINGFEIER (party)

dancers on a bottle of sparkling riesling

RIESLINGFEIER

To celebrate the arrival of Spring and our favorite grape, we are throwing a Riesling Fest ("Feier" in German pronounced FIRE!) for all of you. The Feier is Saturday April 2nd from 1pm-7pm. We will be featuring flights and glasses including our beer collaboration with Great Notion Brewing - the Riesling Radler, our 2020 Pet Matt Sekt Sparkling Dry Riesling and the latest release of the our most renowned wine - 2017 Dry Riesling Willamette Valley. We will have some pairings of hand-made local sausages, kraut and fixings on hand to help you celebrate in high style.

PICKUP PARTY

Save The Date - 'Friends With Benefits' members, Friday, May 13 4-7pm is the wine club pickup party at the winery. We've missed seeing you, and while we are all remaining cautious, we look forward to welcoming you at the tasting room for a super special sip and a snack. Bring a friend and if they join we'll toss in an extra bottle in your box. See you there! Oh, and don’t forget, adding extra bottles to your club box gets you that sweet 20% discount during pick-up.

We want to assure you that there is zero supply-chain disruption of fine wines for your table here at Love & Squalor HQ. However we are down to the last case of the most delicious 2016 Pinot Noir Reserve. It seems like we just released this, but it went FAST because it is amazing, of course! Jump online and grab the last of it.

Oh My, What a Busy July!

We're very excited to be releasing the new wines next week and have planned a mess of events so you can taste the goodness. NOTE: This dinner has been moved to August 7th. Seats are still available I believe. Next week - -Tuesday night - is the debut of a series of 'Mentor/Mentee Dinners' at Wildwood. The idea, brainchild of Wildwood somm Savanna Ray, is to pair up-and-coming winemakers with the winemaker who gave them their start. This dinner will feature my first wine teacher Patty Green of Patricia Green Cellars, me, and the dynamic duo behind Walter Scott Wines. Lots of wine, delicious foods and some ribald tales I am sure. Call Wildwood for reservations.

7/14 - Pouring New Seasons Raleigh Hills - 2pm 7/15 - Plate & Pitchfork w/St. Jack and Gruner - SOLD OUT 7/20 - Pouring New Seasons Sellwood - 4pm 7/21 - Pouring New Seasons 7 Corners - 4pm 7/28-7/29 - International Pinot Noir Festival (aka wino summer camp)

Stay tuned for more chances to taste Love & Squalor as the summer trips along.

Spring Has Sprung

The warehouse is getting emptier and emptier. The blends in the cellar are getting closer to their bottling date. In the meantime there are plenty of opportunities to get out and taste some Love & Squalor. This Friday from 3-6pm I will be pouring at the brand new Zupan's store in Lake Grove. I look forward to surprising the crowds with the Fancy Pants Riesling and other treats.

Next month marks the 10-year anniversary of the original eastside wine spot - Noble Rot. The Rot has been my hang since they opened, long before I was a winemaker. They were the first place to put Love & Squalor on the list and the first to pour it in a flight. I got all sorts of warm fuzzies for them. The Rotten Girls plus Leather are putting together a bash that is open to the public. 11 wineries pouring, mouth-watering snacks, some live tunes. If it is even half as memorable as the first anniversary, well . . . I guess I'll remember some of it.

Hope to see you all out there this Spring.

It's Gonna Happen!

Sunset View 8/30/11

This cool Spring and Summer has left a lot of winemakers wondering if we will ever get to harvest grapes this year. Well, of course we will. And the Pinot grapes will be red as proven out by these snaps taken on Tuesday at Bob Bailey's Sunset View Vineyard in the Eola Hills. See?

Summer of (Oregon)Riesling

I am happy that Paul Greico's obsession with all things Riesling has spread out from it's New York home and has become a national epidemic. Here in Oregon, nine restaurants are participating in the Summer of Riesling by pouring three Rieslings by the glass all summer long, with many others restaurants highlighting Riesling as well. The following are signed up:

Bar Avignon, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Clyde Common, Portland

Gruner, Portland

June, Portland

Le Pigeon, Portland

Heathman Restaurant and Bar, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Metrovino, Portland

Ned Ludd, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Olympic Provisions, Portland

Love & Squalor Riesling is showing up at these fine spots and is additionally ON TAP! at Kir and St. Jack. This is a special one barrel 2010 cuvee that I created for these guys. When it's gone, it's gone.
